MY 1996 Proton Wira 1.5 automatic needs to be topped up with about 400ml of engine oil every 3,000km.
I have been advised to renew the valves on the engine, but before I have any work carried out, I would appreciate your comments on what the best options are.

YOU have not mentioned the total mileage of your vehicle but, as it is already 10 years old, one can expect the rubber seals to have hardened as a result of natural aging, thus reducing their effectiveness.
The seals I am referring to are the valve stem seals that prevent oil from entering the inlet and exhaust manifolds via the valve guides.
Replacement of the seals entails removing the valve springs in order to access the oil seal, a job that can be done without removing the cylinder head from the engine.
However, wherever possible, the cylinder should be removed so that the valve guides and stems can also be checked for wear, and replaced as required.
The overall cost of a top overhaul is not prohibitive and it pays in the long run to have a complete cylinder head overhaul done whenever it is removed from the engine.
