FARMINGTON, N.M. (AP) - James Netcher waded through some nasty stuff, jumping into a pool of raw sewage to repair a faulty valve at a wastewater treatment plant near Farmington.
In doing so, he saved the San Juan River from a sewage torrent and helped San Juan County administrators avoid what likely would have been high costs in potential damages.
For his trouble, county commissioners on Thursday presented Netcher with a certificate of appreciation for his fast reaction and commitment to getting the job done.
Netcher says he simply forgot everything else and jumped into the mess to get the work done when the break occurred last August. He then went home and showered, then returned to work overtime at the San Juan County fair.
